What is a Community Garden?

Community gardens vary considerably. The basic philosophical idea behind a community garden is that it is important to the community and draws people together in a variety of ways. Some gardens are a gathering of individuals who may garden together but have individual space to do so. Other gardens are entirely worked by that gardening community, where sharing is the important factor and all the produce is available for the members. Some gardens have fences, some do not. Some gardens have lots of facilities, some do not. So with all this variance, it is the community who garden together that is the binding principle.

In the Ballarat area there are many community gardens of varying types. Many are based in schools but there are some that are attached to a church community, some occurring in Ministry of Housing areas, some in aged care facilities and others that stand alone.

My hope is that all these gardens will be interested in being members of a network which will enable them to communicate with each other, learn from each other and collaborate with each other to increase our food security into the future.

There will be a resources page where we can link to other websites to learn more about gardening. One website will be that of John Dicthburn who has been gardening in Ballarat for many years. Here is the link to his website.  Urban Food Garden

This is a new article. My homework is to look for material for the website.
